Guide to Starcraft 2 Wallpapers

Already crazy about Starcraft 2?

Well nothing says “I love zergs” more than a Starcraft 2 wallpaper of an acid spitting hydralisk on your desktop. Unfortunately, Blizzard only released 4 official Starcraft 2 wallpapers so far in different screen resolutions, so it’s really a tight choice. Besides, of the four, one is a huge logo that’s largely uninteresting, 2 picture Terran marines (those are pretty cool) and one has Zeratul in it (personally I don’t like that wallpaper much). If you’re a zerg or protoss fan you’ll want to start looking somewhere else.

Make them

Fortunately, you can make your very own Starcraft 2 desktop wallpapers with ease; here are a couple of suggestions:

In-Game Photos

While there are only 4 official wallpapers, don’t forget about the other 100ish in-game screenshots that can be found around the Internet in various sizes. The in-game engine is so beautifully rendered and contains some great art and texture work that a good battle screen can easily pass as wallpaper. While the original screenshots are high res and high quality, take note that if you take a screenshot from an unofficial gaming site, chances are its quality will be tuned down to improve loading speed or to avoid cluttering the servers if download and link numbers increase.

Official and Unofficial Artwork

Pretty much the same idea as with using in-game photos as Starcraft 2 wallpapers, with the addition that there’s already a lot of unofficial artwork being created by S2 enthusiasts all over the World. You can easily find high quality user made Starcraft 2 artwork all around the Internet and it’s usually free (it should be, otherwise they’re probably infringing Blizzard’s copyright). The only problem is that unofficial artwork might not have a big enough resolution to fit your screen.

Joining Pictures Together

This could prove to be a solution to the unofficial artwork problem I mentioned above. If you need a 1680×1050 Starcraft 2 wallpaper but only have 2-3 artwork pictures that you really enjoy, stick them together using a photo editing software of choice. In case you want to spice it up a little, you can also find a lot of interesting picture elements inside the Blizzard Starcraft 2 fan kit, elements such as borders, logos, banners and the likes.

Or you can just Wait

There’s really a lot of ways you can have fun mixing up pictures to create Starcraft 2 wallpapers, but if you’re not very confident in your skills or if you simply want something that’s Blizzard made on your desktop, either choose from the existing official wallpapers or wait for a couple of weeks. Rumor has it that the Zerg portion of the site will be ready soonish and it will be accompanied by a new batch of trailers, screenshots, artwork sketches and of course, Starcraft 2 wallpapers.
